The 22nd March is the dedicated day this year when we celebrate the women who nurture us, raise our families and look out for us – our mothers, grandmothers, stepmothers and surrogate mothers.
The custom of Mother’s Day, when we honour our mothers, dates back to the 1600’s when England celebrated a day called Mothering Sunday and was celebrated on the 4th Sunday of Lent (the 40 day period leading up to Easter). Many of England’s poor worked as servants and, as most of their jobs were located far from their homes, they would be given the day off in order to return home to spend the entire day with their mothers. Often whey would enjoy a specially baked cake called a mothering cake as a token of their affection.
